What is R-Value? A Simple Guide to Choosing the Right Sleeping Pad

If you’ve ever been on the market for a new sleeping mat, you’ve probably noticed that every style comes with its own R-value. But what does it actually mean, and why is it so important?

The short answer? R-value is a measure of how well a sleeping mat insulates you from the cold ground beneath you. Meaning it can make all the difference between a warm and cosy night's sleep and a long cold, uncomfortable one.

So what is R-Value?

R-Value is a standard measurement of a sleeping mat’s thermal resistance, essentially, how effectively it resists heat loss, stopping heat from escaping from your body to the ground.

Unlike sleeping bags which work to insulate you from the cold air around you, your sleeping mat's job is to protect you from the ground beneath. Even the warmest sleeping bag won't be able to stop conductive heat loss if your mat isn’t up to the job, as the insulation beneath you is compressed by your body weight.

To put it simply, the higher the R-value, the greater the insulation and the lower the R-value the less insulation.

What R-value do you need?

The right R-value depends on the season and conditions you will be camping in:

For most Aussie hikers, an R-value between 3 and 5 is a great all round choice. It tends to provide enough insulation for most adventures whilst still remaining a lightweight option.

But if you are regularly heading out during winter or camping on snow you’ll need to look at options with an R-value over 5.

Is a higher R-value always better?

Not necessarily. A higher r-value usually means more insulation, more weight, a larger pack size and a higher cost, which is perfectly justifiable if you actually need it. But, if you’re only hiking during the warmer months carrying a winter pad may not make a whole lot of sense.

The goal should be to find a mat that has enough insulation to ensure you are comfortable in the conditions you will encounter rather than the highest R-value you can find. 

Can you combine R-Values?

Yes! One of the best things about R-values is that they are additive. If you use two sleeping pads together, you simply add their r-values. For example:

  • Foam pad (R-Value 2.0)

  • Inflatable pad (R-Value 4.5)

Combined R-Value = 6.5

To increase insulation many campers use a lightweight foam pad underneath their inflatable sleeping pad. 

Choosing the right sleeping pad for you

When shopping for a sleeping pad, ask yourself:

  • What seasons will I be camping in?

  • Will I be camping on snow or frozen ground?

  • Am I prioritising low weight or maximum comfort?

  • Do I sleep particularly cold?

Ultralight hikers often look for the best warmth-to-weight ratio, while car campers may prioritise comfort over packed size.

R-Value might seem like just another technical specification, but it's one of the most important factors when it comes to getting a good night's sleep outdoors.
