Engineering Meets Adventure: Inside Chicken Tramper Ultralight Gear

Engineering Meets Adventure: Inside Chicken Tramper Ultralight Gear

Inspiration Born on the Trail

Chicken Tramper Ultralight Gear emerged from a simple need: lighter, more durable backpacking gear built by hikers who truly understand trail demands. In 2018, mechanical engineering graduates Austin Gongos and Nathan Ackerman, college fraternity brothers turned thru-hiking collaborators set out on the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT). Frustrated by the weight and unnecessary features of typical packs, they decided to create their own gear. What began as DIY prototypes born of “Make Your Own Gear” forums evolved into a full-fledged brand after fellow hikers started asking where they could get their trail-tested designs

A Name With Personality

Naturally as engineers Austin and Nathan were more focused on the product itself rather than the business name itself. The name comes from their love of chickens which had become an ongoing joke amongst their fraternity and ‘tramper’ the New Zealand slang for hiker.

Built by Hikers, for Hikers

From day one, CTUG gear has been designed and tested by the people who know best — hikers themselves. Packs, fanny packs, bottle sleeves, and pouches are all made with premium materials like X-Pac VX21 and Dyneema, balancing feather-light weight with rugged trail performance. Every feature has a purpose, and there’s no fluff (unless you count the occasional trail dog in the workshop).

From Michigan to the World

CTUG started sewing every piece by hand in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula — a part of the US as wild as the gear they build. As demand has grown, they’ve expanded some manufacturing to Vietnam, working closely with trusted partners to keep the same high standards, quality materials, and attention to detail.

Colour, Customisation, and Community

CTUG’s not afraid of colour — in fact, their gear often stands out with bold, custom combos. That’s by design. Hikers can mix and match fabrics to make their pack as unique as their trail name. They also take feedback seriously, using hiker input to tweak designs, improve comfort, and refine features year after year.

Sustainability Through Longevity

In the ultralight world, durability is sustainability. CTUG gear is built to last thousands of miles, meaning fewer replacements and less waste. It’s gear that’s kind to both your back and the backcountry.

Why We Love Them at Ultralight Gear

CTUG is exactly the kind of brand we get excited about — gear that’s functional, fun, and born from real trail miles. They’ve found that sweet spot between smart engineering and genuine hiker soul. Whether you’re chasing ultralight minimalism or just want gear that won’t let you down.
