I have been aware of Osprey and the Far Point 40 for some years now. It set the standard for one carry on piece of luggage that can hold enough for a whole trip. It has remained the standard for other products to aspire to.
Great pack, great service
I’ve been an Osprey fan for yonks, using an Atmos AG 50L for backpacking around Europe, including when I go to the Austrian and Swiss Alps for skiing. It has never let me down. The Osprey packs are well-designed, tough and they look great. Yet light in weight.
On my last trip, I covered something like 7,000+ km, in and out of trains, trams and buses; from the low countries up to the top of Zermatt; plus up and down elevators and ladder-stairs so narrow you couldn’t push out your elbows. Plus I hiked distances. All the while, the Atmos 50 performed. Total comfort. No aches and pains.
But note that I had it professionally set up, which is what I recommend. Otherwise, if you’re adjusting your straps and waist belt yourself, make sure you consult the Osprey manual, available on their website. And while you’re at it, adjust the pack with the approximate weight you’ll carry. Trust me, that makes a vast difference.
So, to my latest acquisition…
And indeed, it is none other than an Osprey.
I wanted a backpack that I could take onto the plane cabin (mainly for domestic travel), and the Osprey Farpoint 40L was ideal. There are a feature or two I could wish for, but they are minor, and not insurmountable. And comparing it with the likes of the Atmos pack would be grossly unfair. The Farpoint is designed for carry-on travel, and for that purpose, it shines. I was again pleased to see the build-quality of Osprey. It remains to be seen whether I’d be totally happy with the straps and waist belt, given I have not used it yet. But I reckon they would be fine, even for some distance on your feet. Probably not as good as the Atmos 50 for that purpose, but again, it’s not designed with long-distance hiking in mind. It’ll be perfect for the home> airport> plane> airport> accommodation type of travel.
I should also mention that my partner had beaten me to it, buying the women’s equivalent - the Fairview 40L - some months ago. But I waited for the colour I wanted. It has straps appropriate for women. We are both stoked about our purchases.
As for Ultralight Gear, I’d buy my gear from them any day. Great prices, especially during their sales, along with reliable and prompt delivery. What’s not to like? I say, support them. We need stores like Ultralight Gear. Thank guys!
A great pack and what I need for my travel. Really well made and a lot of thought gone into it. I have an Osprey stratos 36 which is a great pack but the farpoint fits a different use for me now. Stayed with Osprey as they are made so well.
Great service
