Meet Rumpl: The Blanket That Belongs Outside

Feb 26, 2026

The Origin Story

On a surf and ski tour of California, Rumpl’s founders were sleeping in a van, several miles up a dirt road near a secret hot spring. They awoke the next morning in subzero temperatures with an engine that wouldn’t start, far outside of cell reception and the nearest town. They decided to bundle up in their sleeping bags and drink whiskey while they watched and waited for someone to come along.

Cozy and warm, wrapped in their sleeping bags, they realized an opportunity to create an entirely new category of outdoor product and the idea for Rumpl was born: The world’s most versatile blankets and layers, designed to stand up to the outdoors and the elements.

The First Blanket

The first Rumpl blanket looked like a sleeping bag had a clever, much cooler child. It was quilted, technical, weather-resistant on the outside, soft on the inside, and designed to wrap around you instead of just sit on your bed. Still unmistakably a blanket - just one that belonged outside as much as it did at home. It also only came in one colour which is hard to imagine now!

The Big Idea

Rumpl exists to keep people warm, comfortable, and ready to get after it - wherever “after it” happens to be for them. We take the thing people love most about home and build it tough, light and small enough for adventure.

What makes Rumpl blankets different

Traditional blankets are cozy but fragile. Rumpl blankets are cozy and capable. They’re water-resistant, stain-resistant, packable, and built to handle dirt, sand, rain, and whatever else your day throws at them.

What kind of adventures are Rumpl made for?

Adventures - honestly? All of them. Campfires, beach hangs, road trips, van life, post-surf sunsets, trailhead chill-outs, backyard picnics, festivals, outdoor naps, and everything in between. If there’s a moment where you want to be warm and comfortable, Rumpl belongs there.

The Gear Itself

What goes into a Rumpl blanket

Recycled technical insulation, durable 30D ripstop fabrics, weather-resistant PFAS free DWR coatings, and thoughtful design that balances warmth with packability. Plus little details that matter - paracord corner loops, cape-clip snap closures, and stuff sacks that actually work.

What makes them so special?

They’re designed for being used. Rumpl blankets handle the elements without losing that soft, comforting feel. They’re warm like your favorite puffy jacket, and built tough like proper outdoor gear.

Sustainability & Responsibility

Rumpl is a B-Corp and Certified Carbon Neutral. We believe that making great gear also means taking care of the places we use it. That means smarter material choices, less waste, and building products people will actually keep and use for years - not replace every season.

Recycled materials are a core part of the design, not an afterthought. Rumpl uses recycled insulation and fabrics wherever possible. Every Original Puffy Blanket is made from 60 recycled plastic bottles.

Durability is sustainability. Rumpl blankets are built to last - to survive beach sand, muddy dogs, sticky fingers, and countless adventures. We believe the longer a product lives, the less impact it has.

Why we love Rumpl at Ultralight Gear?

Ultralight Gear and Rumpl share the same mindset: smarter gear, better experiences, less fuss. Ultralight customers care about performance, quality, and thoughtful design which is exactly what Rumpl brings to the table, just in blanket form.

Customers will love that Rumpl isn’t just “another blanket.” It’s lightweight, packable, genuinely useful, and built with the same attention to detail they expect from the rest of their kit - but way more comfortable.
