How to make the perfect coffee whilst hiking?
For lots of hikers a good cup of coffee is non-negotiable in the morning. The good news is you don’t need to settle for bland instant coffee or lug around a heavy set up to enjoy a good cup of coffee. We have some clever ultralight options that make it easy to get that caffeine fix without weighing your pack down.
The Basics
Coffee on the trail doesn’t have to be complex, but a little bit of gear can go a long way. There are plenty of ways to make coffee when out and about on your adventures but if you don’t want to sacrifice flavour here are our two trail tested solutions!
Option 1 - GSI Ultralight Java Drip
Weighing in at just 11.4g, the Java Drip is the go to if your priority is weight. It is as minimalist as it gets, it folds flat and nests under a standard fuel cartridge. The nylon mesh filter is reusable and quick to rinse making cleaning up easy and hassle free.
Option 2 - AeroPress Go
Now, if you’re a coffee nerd and the Java Drip isn’t going to cut it, meet the AeroPress Go. The AeroPress is slightly heavier at 320g as it comes with everything you need to brew cafe quality coffee anywhere - brewer, plunger, scoop, stirrer - and it all fits inside its own mug. One of key benefits is its versatility allowing you to brew American style coffee, cold brew and espresso style for use in lattes and cappuccinos.
Trail Brewing Tips
Here are our top tips to make sure you get the best coffee possible:
-
Use freshly ground coffee: Pre-grind at home and store in a zip lock bag.
-
Watch your water: Boil just enough to brew (roughly 250 ml per cup) and make sure to let it cool to avoid boiling your grounds.
-
Keep it clean: Rinse your gear as soon as you’re done to avoid build up and nasty smells.
-
Don’t forget your mug!: Double-wall titanium or lightweight plastic mugs will retain the heat nicely and will help to avoid any burns whilst still being lightweight.
Final Thoughts
Coffee on the trail doesn’t have to be instant (unless you’re into that sort of thing). With a little planning and the right gear, your morning brew can be just as good out bush as it is at home. If you’re keen to keep your pack weight down the GSI Ultralight Java Drip is the perfect fit for you but if you’re looking for a little more luxury the AeroPress is the solution for you.
