Yama Mountain Gear is the brain child of Gen Shimizu, a long distance hiker, meticulous designer and the one person force behind the brand. The brand was born from conversations on his journey on the Pacific Crest Trail in 2006. Yama is a company built around a workshop and a life on the trail. 

Since then, he’s strived to get out on the trail as much as possible and to design efficient, thoughtful and beautiful gear inspired by these experiences on the trail. His shelters are shaped by real-world conditions — gear that works in actual weather, over actual miles. Guided by his mantra, “Hike Simply,” Gen’s design philosophy focuses on the fundamentals that bring him to the trail, helping him appreciate whatever challenges the journey delivers.

Ultralight on the Environment

As Yama continues to grow Gen is committed to minimising his environmental impact so we can all keep enjoying the beauty of our planet. He’s the first to admit he doesn’t have all the answers but he’s taking meaningful steps in the right direction. From carbon offsetting to participating in the Change Climate Project, Yama is setting an example for how small, independent makers can lead the way in sustainability.
